Unit 7 Architecture | Projects - Winnipeg Beach Summer Home

Winnipeg Beach Summer Home

Location:  Winnipeg Beach, MB
Type: Residential - New Construction
Year: Completed 2015

The owners of this modern weekend home had very modest requests.  They wanted an easy, maintenance free,  one storey design with a very open plan throughout; lots of glass with a strong visual connection to the landscape and lake; and a master bedroom facing the water.

A stepped massing on the lakefront side was used to create a number of corner conditions that when glazed, provide optimum lakefront views, and also take advantage of its parallelogram shaped lot.  All roof forms on the primary building slope inland.  One enters low on the land side and interior volumes rise toward the water.  Building faces on the water side are largely glazed and of generous height.   Public spaces and the master bedroom occupy coveted positions along the lakefront.

The exterior material palette is comprised of metal roofing, cement board panelling, fibreglass windows and doors, and cedar cladding in select areas.   Cedar is used primarily in sheltered areas to minimize direct exposure to the elements and reduce maintenance while still using real wood for exterior cladding.  The use of cedar continues inside, and is used as ceiling cladding throughout.
